A celebration for February 8

February 8th is Hari-kuyo or Needle Festival in Japan. From my research, I have learned that on this day in Buddhist and Shinto temples throughout Japan, a prayer of thanks is said to old or broken sewing needles from the past year. This tradition is about four centuries old! The used and/or broken needles and pins are placed into tofu and prayers of thanks are offered for the good service and use that these items have provided. Seamstresses (incl. kimono makers) and tailors also pray for increased sewing skills in the coming year.

You can read more about this delightful tradition here and here. I think I will give a nod of thanks to all my quilting and sewing gear and accessories to celebrate the spirit of Hari-kuyo.....but I think I'll skip the tofu!
