I think my sewing machine is ticked off at me. I love my sewing machine--a Janome Memory Craft 6600P that I saved my pennies for for quite a long time. After 16 months of ownership--happy, problem-free ownership--I finally (very recently) gave her a name. Pollyanna. There is a great story behind how she got this name--and it's a good name, too--from Pollyanna the Glad Girl--and until yesterday she has been a good and happy machine and has never failed me. Until yesterday. I am starting to think she doesn't like her name--all I did was clean out lint and clean the bobbin area, and now she is stitching by herself well after my foot is off the pedal, and, when I raise the presser foot so she can't sew, she beeps at me incessantly to please put the presser foot down so she can sew some more. Definitely a ghost in the machine. We're going to the repair shop tomorrow.
As I type this, I am brainstorming a list of other quilty things that I can do in the likely event the 6600 gets held for repair:
1. I could still sew on my Featherweight--that's Abigail (she likes her name apparently 'cause she sews beautifully).
2. I have a TON of pressing of blocks, strips of blocks, fabric, etc. to do.
3. I need to trace some templates on Golden Threads paper for my "Willow Tree Hill" wallhanging project (see link in my list of Quilting Projects in the Pipeline below) with which to stitch the willow tree branches. I think am going to try some Lana thread by Aurifil for this stitching.
4. I have a little 60 drawer organizer unit that is awaiting being filled with needles and other sewing supplies. I need to make neat little labels for it, too.
5. The wedding quilt has some fabric cutting yet to be done.
So it looks like I have enough to keep me busy for quite a while!

Have you tried sewing using the start/stop button to rule out if it's the machine or the foot pedal?
It could be possible that something came loose in the foot pedal or got jammed inside.
Granted, this was my Grandma's Singer it happened to, but anything is possible. Her machine was running slower; we told her she was expecting too much (she's 88). Finally one day my mom was doing some maintenance on the machine. She didn't have her shoes on and was getting poked. Turns out my Grandma got a "lemon head" pin stuck in the pedal, sharp side up.
